Over 1, 000 adults enroll into basic literacy classes in Bauchi

In its effort to ensure that adults obtained qualitative education, Gamawa Local Government Council in Bauchi state has enrolled 1, 138 persons into the 55 basic literacy classes this year.
The Chief Adult Education officer, Alhaji Aliyu Mustapha told newsmen in Gamawa that out of the total figure, 735 were males while 403 were females.
Mustapha disclosed that there were additional three post literacy classes with 61 female pupils and three functional literacy classes having 131 enrollments into the three non-formal learning centers in Udubo and Gamawa towns.
He further revealed that another 527 pupils have been enrolled into 22 Arabic classes where as both western and Islamic education would be taught respectively.
Mustapha, who described adult education as a very important factor for socio economic development, said however that the sector was confronted by scarcity of working materials and transportation.
Also speaking, the chairperson committee for advocacy, sensitization and monitoring of 2016 non formal learning centers, Mrs. Asabe Lawal said the committee was assigned to visit and access whether all the centers are functional or not.
Mrs. Lawal who expressed satisfaction over the pupil’s attendance and teachers’ performance in the three centers of Gamawa and Udubo, urged the local government council to provide more support to mass education.
She observed that mass education helps immensely towards political education, marketing, sanitation, health care delivery, cooking, skill acquisition and agriculture, among others.
