Ooni re-introduces “Oduduwa Cup” football tournament… donates trophy

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi is to re-introduce the moribund “Oduduwa Cup,” a football tournament amongst various football clubs across Yorubaland and beyond.
This was contained in the monarch’s New Year message made available to journalists and signed by the Director of Media & Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Comrade Moses Olafare.
According to the statement, Oba Ogunwusi has already floated a commission with a secretariat with a former Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Chief Adegboyega Onigbinde as the head, to be assisted by an Ex Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi.
The Director of Media & Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace stressed that Oba Ogunwusi has donated a trophy to be competed for in the football tournament.
“The decision to re-introduce the competition forms part of my maiden speech as the Ooni of Ife during my coronation. I made it expressly clear that my core ambition is to see to the unity of Yorubaland. This competition is surely one of the several initiatives lined up to achieve the objective” Oba Ogunwusi said.
