The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Ondo state weekend accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for de-listing its candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) from contest the November 26, 2016 governorship election.
The Chairman of PDP, Engr Clement Faboyede at a Press Conference in Akure said, INEC has a duty to protect her image over the allegation of a demand of one million US dollar levelled against the Commission by a factional candidate, Barr. Jimoh Ibrashim.
Faboyede however gave INEC 24 hour ultimatum to take Ibrahim to court if the allegation is unfounded to enable them maintain the integrity they had built over the years as an Independent and unbiased umpire.
He however recalled how Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff conducted the Congress from Ward to state level when he was the National Chairman of PDP only to turn against the house he co built.
He also reiterated the fact that Barr. Eyitayo Jegede was duly elected as the party’s Governorship candidate for the November 26, governorship election and to do otherwise will amount to abuse of power.
His words, ”we are the authentic state Executive Committee members whose letters were signed by Alhaji Musdafa who conducted the state Congress and INEC has ever since been relating with us until recent times”.
The Chairman also fingered the All Progressive Congress (APC) led Federal Government in the crisis within PDP in Ondo State, saying, INEC had always conducted free and fair election during the days of PDP led Federal Government.
He queried the reason for the delay by INEC in releasing candidates’ list after Working hours of Public Servants on Thursday which happened to be the final day INEC gave political parties to submit their candidates’ names.
PDP, he said rejects INEC list, adding that the emergence of dictatorship in the nation’s politics be discontinued, ”the Jimoh Ibrahim on INEC list is a member of Accord Party.”
He therefore warned that Eyitayo Jegede should not be sacrificed ”to appease someone that accused INEC of demanding a one million US dollars bribe”.
In his own contribution, the Legal Adviser for PDP in Ondo State, Barr. Kunle Ijalana warned INEC against the repeat of event of 1983 when the state was set on fire, adding that, ”compromised judgement on the issue of who flies the flag of the party on November 26 is nothing but a coup”.
He assured that Eyitayo Jegede’s name will soon be returned on the list of contestants in the interest of fair play and justice, ”since INEC was forced to do otherwise to protest the interest of powers that be”.
