Worried by the high mortality rate on roads, the Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, Sector Commander Rotimi Adeleye has promised to reactivate Mobile Courts on major routes in the state as soon as possible.
Adeleye who made the promise during a courtesy visit to leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akure assured that the Mobile Courts which had gone moribund in recent times will soon be re introduced.
When the Mobile Courts are put in place, he said, excessive overloading on the part of commercial vehicles and Timber lorries will be checked on all roads a cross the state.
According to him, after putting necessary measures in place by seeking the cooperation of the Chief Justice of the state to provide a Magistrate and other steps taken, all road accidents would be curbed.
He however attributed the major cause of road accidents to reckless driving of motorists coupled with overloading and lack of adequate checks of vehicles before embarking on journeys.
He therefore promised to intensify efforts in sensitising members of the public on both electronic and print media from time to time.
He noted that, “booking at times does not matter, what is more important is application of correcting devices for lack of the needful such as headlamps, break lights and fire extinguisher among others”.
While responding, the Chairman, NUJ in Ondo State, Comrade James Sowole cautioned that the FRSC should apply human face in their operations while dealing with members of the public.
He advised that the Command should stop given scanty information when vehicles involved in accidents rather than limiting themselves on number of casualties.
