Former deputy governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore on Wednesday emerged as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship, candidate for the September, 22 gubernatorial election in the state.
Declaring Senator Omisore winner of the Osun state governorship primary election, the returning officer and Chairman of the party’s electoral panel from Abuja, Professor Rufai Alkali said Senator Omisore polled 123,485 votes to defeat Otunba Yemisi Oladeji who polled 1,805 votes and another aspirant, Mr Atanda, Munirudeen Kehinde who came third with 1,617 votes.
Professor Alkali while announcing the result of the primary election declared that “in line with the electoral acts which guide the conduct of primary elections in Nigeria, I hereby declared Senator Iyiola Omisore the winner of the SDP primary election in Osun State”.
The returning officer and Chairman of the party’s electoral panel from Abuja, added ” no negative report was received from any of the local governments” in Osun state and that “everything went well”.
He stressed that the primary election was held peacefully in the 332 wards across 31 local councils in Osun state.
Professor Alkali however lauded the peaceful conduct of leaders and members of the party in Osun state during and after the primary elections, saying , the election was thorough, fair, and transparent,
With this, SDP has shown other parties what to do in conducting a good primary election, especially adopting a direct participation of party members, allowing people to chose a candidate of their choice, not a representative voting through delegates.”
