Edo State Government has said that the newly trained Libya returnees will become advocates against illegal migration and human trafficking even as they will be empowered in their various skills.
The Special Senior Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Anti Human Trafficking Issues, Solomon Okoduwa made this known while hosting some Libya returnees at Youth House in Benin City where they were feted by the governor’s aide with all variety of foods in the spirit of the season.
Addressing the returnees including pregnant women, Okoduwa said the meeting was necessitated by efforts of government to give them sense of belonging.
Apart from the merriment, Okoduwa used the occasion to reiterate government’s plans for the Libya returnees and youths at large in 2018.
He said: “A lot have been lined up for you from January 2018 including those that have been trained and others yet to be trained. Before the end of January, all sorts of agricultural programmes will kick off to empower you. Apart from your empowerment,  government is also determined to addressing the root causes of the illegal migration.”
Okoduwa added that ”  this administration led by Governor Godwin Obaseki has accepted returnees as its project. This illegal migration menace started many years ago, obviously, past governments didn’t see any reason to reintegrate you. thank God we have a listening governor now who sees your plight as his project. Let’s support this government to succeed and he will deliver on his campaign promises.”
“This government plans to empower you, many of you have started receiving the monthly stipends he promised, 20, 000 Naira monthly to each of you while the children are getting 10, 000 Naira each for the next three months. Some of you will equally become ambassadors of the state by advocating against this cancer called Human trafficking… And ensure you expose the cartel of the marauding traffickers, you know them, they are in your communities.” The SSA noted.
He however urged the Libya returnees, mainly youths to use their stipends judiciously before they are fully empowered.
Spokespersons for the returnees, Pastor Sam Asemota and Lucky Eghianruwa were full of joy for bringing them together to celebrate with them during this Yuletide.
