Yoruba Obas Conflict Resolution Committee has warned politicians in Yorubalnd to stop fanning the embers of discord among the Obas through the politicisation of traditional matters. The committee at its meeting in Ibadan on Tuesday, lauded the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi for visiting the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, in Oyo during the celebration of the Alaafin’s 45th coronation anniversary.
Reading the communique issued at the end of their meeting in Ibadan, the Secretary of the committee, who is also the Sabiganna of Iganna, Oba Saliu Oyemonla asked Yoruba politicians to respect traditional rulers and join hands with them in crisis management and the development of the entire Yorubarace, saying, “with unity among the Yoruba, our politicians can speak with one voice for the benefits of the race”.
The royal father stressed that the committee had attempted to achieve the re-conciliatory move by the Ooni and that all the traditional rulers in Yorubaland would strive to consolidate the peace move in order to foster unity among the entire race.
“We have been working for peace and unity of the Yoruba race. Lack of unity has been the problem affecting the Yoruba race as a nation. Our efforts have yielded a fruitful result with the visit of Ooni Ogunwusi to the Alaafin of Oyo, on Sunday. It marked a turning point in the history of the Yoruba race. This shows that the Yorubas have come together and decided to unite. This committee will not rest on its oars,”he said.
Oba Oyemonla added that “the target is to ensure that we consolidate on the gains of our efforts and enthrone unity among the Yoruba people”, saying, “we plan to do this by meeting the Alaafin and other principal monarchs. What the newly-crowned Ooni did is a plus to the effort of this committee and it is commendable.”
He emphasized that having unity among the Ooni and Alaafin would promote development in Yorubaland and the entire Nigeria, saying, “If the Ooni and the Alaafin represent the interest of the Yoruba people in a meeting, we will not be maginalised because they are respected principal traditional rulers”.
