President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chief Chris Isiguzo, has told Nigerian journalists to promote development journalism.

Isiguzo gave the directive at the official commissioning of the remodelled Secretariat of the Lagos State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists.

The event took place on Saturday 28th January 2023 at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The NUJ national leader said: “Let’s in our writing help deliver credible, transparent, free and fair elections for Nigerians, and not pander to primordial sentiments; it’s in our hands.

“You’re strategic for the delivery of credible elections. Please, do the right thing. Support us in protecting and promoting development journalism.”

The NUJ chief advised journalists that they should not allow themselves to be tricked, bought or intimidated by politicians to truncate the year 2023 general elections and the country’s democracy.

He stressed that journalists should use their reporting skills to pull Nigeria out of poverty.

Isiguzo on behalf of NUJ Lagos State Council presnted Grand Patron Award to Rev. Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi who sponsored the construction of the edifice in demonstration of her commitment and contribution to the growth of journalism in Nigeria.

“We are grateful,” the NUJ President told the benefctor, Reverend Mother Ajayi.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide

Sanwo-Olu, was represented on the occasion by the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho.

A renowned journalist and a former two-term governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, attended the event. He said that Nigeria Union Journalists is the supreme body governing journalists in the country and, therefore, should be accorded all due honour and respect.

Osoba expressed gratitude that the NUJ secretariat he commissioned 20 years ago when he was governor had been transformed into a magnificent house. He expressed satisfaction that he had the privileged to witness again its remodelling.

The remodelled Secretariat was commissioned by Rev. Mother Ajayi. She thanked God Almighty for leading her to embark on the project.

Earlier, Chairman of NUJ, Lagos State Council, Comrade Adeleye Ajayi, commended his predecessors for their vision for the secretariat which he and his team completed.
