NTI to graduates 18,000 students, honours 3 dignitaries as Sherehu unveils two books

The National Teachers Institute (NTI), Kaduna is set to graduate 18,000 students for the 2014 academic session and 4th National Convocation with the institute’s fellowship to be bestowed on three dignitaries just as the Director would unveil two books during the convocation, authored by him.
The Director General and Chief Executive of the institute, Dr Aminu Ladan Sharehu disclosed this today during a pre-convocation media brief at the headquarters, Kaduna-Zaria Road.
Sharehu said the 18,000 comprises of graduates with Post Graduate Diploma in Education, National Certificate in Education and Advance Diploma in Education from across all the study centres in the nation.
He identified those to be honoured with the institute’s fellowship (FNTI) as Professor Emeritus Thomas Kolawole Adeyanju, Dr Sylvester Onoja and Alhaji Garba Noma, Jarman Bauchi all of whom have contributed to the development and growth of education at various levels and different in Nigeria and beyond.
The Director General said  two books with the tittles; “Managing The Nigerian Economy; Trends and Dynamics” and “Managing Quality Assurance in Open and Distance Education” both authored by him would be presented to the public at the pre-convocation lecture tomorrow Friday.
The first book is to be reviewed by Professor Muhammed Mainoma, the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa Stat5e University and would be presented by the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Garba would be supported by the Rector of Kaduna Polytechnic, Dr Muhammed Bello Ibrahim. While the second book would be Professor Ibrahim Salau of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and to be presented by Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe also of NOUN and with the support of Dr Muhktar Ibrahim Macido, the Provost of federal College of Education (FCE), Zaria.
Sharehu said under him as DG and CEO, utilizing a five-point target, the institution has achieved much. Among the achievements he noted include; strengthening quality assurance, expansion and enhancement, effective staff sourcing and their welfare, introduction and adoption of information and communication technology (ICT), effective management of the institute resources and income.
Others are changing staff salary from ordinary civil servants income to tertiary institute salary structure, donations of computers worth one billion naira for newly introduced Computer Laboratories nationwide free with inverters and power generating sets, special centres such as SMASE, Special Education and Entrepreneuship, Teaching English, e-learning centre , introduction of Bachelors Degree in Education, obtaining and improvement of permanent zonal and state offices with about 500 centres across Nigeria
Shahrehu however identified funding as one of its greatest challenges. He stressed that the institute gets between 25 and 30 per cent as fund from the federal Government through Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but state that should emulate the Federal Government in funding the institute are negligent and are not doing enough.
He also stressed that even as a tertiary institution, NTI does not get any assistance from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), just as many lack the understanding and importance of open and distant leaning (ODL) to improve the quality and expansion of the education sector.
He also asserted that teachers should have between 3 to 4 capacity building training annually to improve on and have the desired quality, why decrying the non assessing of teachers by state and the quality of their knowledge.
NTI is the foremost teacher training institute in Nigeria.
