NSCDC to clamp down on illegal miners

In a bid to guarantee the protection of solid minerals, the Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps, Kaduna state command has warned illegal miners in the state to stave off mining sites or risk arrest and prosecution.
State Commandant of the Corps, Alhaji Modu Bunu, gave the warning at the state NSCDC headquarters, in a reaction to the increasing and worrisome activities of illegal miners.
Recently, some Divisions of the NSCDC in the state uncovered some illegal mining sites where different minerals are exploited.
In view of the ugly development, the Commandant has directed Head of Intelligence, Solid Minerals resources, Area Commanders with all Divisional Officers in the state to step-up measures in apprehending those who indulge in this criminal act for appropriate sanctions.
Describing illegal mining as a serious economic crime and sabotage, Bunu assured that the corps will do everything possible to bring the negative trend under control.
The state NSCDC helmsman maintained that surveillance activities on the protection of solid minerals across the state would be intensified just as it is applicable in anti-vandalism drive.
It would be recalled that Kaduna is among other states where large amount of solid minerals have been found in commercial quantities.
“To be able to discharge our duties effectively, I urge traditional rulers, community leaders with members of the public to cooperate with us by giving us useful and timely information on the activities of illegal miners”, the Commandant added.
