No Country Can Realize Democratic Governance, Sustainable Development Without Women – US Envoy

The  Public Affairs officer, US Consulate in Nigeria, Ms Darcy Zotter on Friday said Democracy can be changed  by the participation of women, in Nigeria, United States and the world at large.

Ms Zotter stated this while speaking  on the theme: “Perspectives in Gender and Politics at a symposium organized by the Initiative for Information, Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria and the American Corner .

The  US Consulate Public Affairs Officer declared that women are better in resource management than men, adding that, “a country cannot fully realize democratic governance and sustainable development without women equal participation in all its policies including politics.”

“Democracy can be changed by the participation of women, in Nigeria, United States and the world at large. In fact, two recent studies one by the United Nations and the other by the United States agency for international development find out that a country cannot fully realize democratic governance and sustainable development without women equal participation in all its policies including politics.” She said.

According to her, democracy can best be judged through women participation, hence the need for increase in the women participation in politics, lamenting that ,women  participation in politics in the United States as well as in Nigeria is presently not enough

In her remark, the Chairperson at the programme, Professor Bolanle Awe emphasized the need for adequate women participation in politics as well as urged that there should be increase in the number of women holding political offices.

President Executive Committee, Initiative for Information, Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria and the American Corner ( IACD ) Ibadan, Professor Ayo Banjo, disclosed that the Centre is among other things committed to education in Oyo state.
