The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lef federal government’s clandestine increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), calling it a “betrayal” of Nigerian workers and the general public.
According to Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, “The federal government’s decision to increase the pump price of PMS is a clear breach of trust and an affront to the welfare of Nigerians.” Ajaero made this statement in a press release issued yesterday, emphasizing the NLC’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers.
The NLC argued that the government’s move is inconsistent with the agreement reached during the national minimum wage negotiations, where it was understood that the pump price of PMS would remain unchanged.
The congress criticized the government’s right-wing market policies, citing the 250% tariff hike in electricity and the stifling conditions of living faced by Nigerians.
The NLC has demanded:
– Immediate reversal of the PMS price increase
– Release of incarcerated protesters
– Halt to indiscriminate arrests and detentions
– Reversal of the 250% electricity tariff hike
– End to Ministry of Labour and Employment hijack
– Policies addressing hunger and insecurity
– End to government’s culture of terror, fear, and deception
The NLC has vowed to take further action, with meetings scheduled to discuss the next course of action.
