The Nigeria Judo Federation has announced its readiness to hold an open Female Judo Championship in Abuja.

While speaking on its preparedness and reasons for the open Championship, Board member of  Nigeria Judo Federation Mrs.Gom Dooter Grace, who is also an international Judo referee, said that this move is part of championing the course of women in sports as well an avenue to create employment for the girl-child and make her self reliance.
According to her, women in sports has actually proven their mettle in the Nigerian sports industry and needed to be sustained.
“I think that this idea will boost the chances of women participation in sports and also increase Nigeria’s medal chances during international competitions. You will agree with me that women have performed creditably well than men historically. So they need to be given good Chances to key into the industry” she asserted.
She further noted that the championship, which is slated for women alone,  is also to be used in filling the gap for retiring fighters. According to her, Judo is expected to feature in the Olympics and Commonwealth games as well as other international championship.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of NJF, Mr. Amaechi Akawu praised the efforts while noting that the Federation has since longed for similar competitions among budding talents to ensure a steady discovery of talents for the replacement of aging ones.
