An educationist Professor Pai Obanya has said education in Nigeria has not achieved the set goals inspite of two decades of Universal Basic Education and the nation is still far from meaningful access to basic education.
This was contained in a paper he presented at the 2016 Annual public lecture organized by the Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with the topic “Education As Learning A Living”.
Prof. Obanya said “this is a situation in which physical access deficits have been worsened by socio-economic, geographical, gender-based and psychological barriers to access secondary education is still tied to the apron strings of preparation for further education instead of the broader girls of insertion into life”.
According to him, self actualisation is helped by process that lead to “Learning a living” a situation in which education is translated into meaningful socio-economic activities that enables one to contribute to personal and societal development on a sustained basis.
Prof. Obanya advised government to direct action and propelled by government in re-direction of education for enhanced responsiveness to “Learning a Living and a vigorous pursuit of the United Nation sustainable Development Goals would help in creating an enabling climate for the education sector.
“Nigerian government should take the development of a youth action plan patterned after that of the Africa”.
The educationists advised Nigeria to evolve into knowledge-intensive ventures that would capitalise on research and development for enhanced competiveness.
