Nigeria Set For Improved Poultry Production – IAR&T Director

Executive Director of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) ,Professor James Adedirn on Tuesday advocated improvement in poultry  production in Nigeria.

Professor Adediran made the call while delivering  his speech at the opening ceremony of “Youth Empowerment Workshop on Poultry Production, Processing and Marketing” as part of a week training programme is organised by Sevenwest Contractor Ltd. and Bora Agro Nigeria Ltd. in collaboration with the Senate Committee on Agriculture.

The IAR&T Executive Director pointed out that as at present,  poultry ” production is an important sub-sector of the livestock industry in Nigeria.” and that  if poultry production is given proper attention, it will go a long way in reducing the problem of malnutrition associated with low  animal protein intake among Nigerians.

“You are all aware that poultry production in Nigeria is an important sub – sector of the livestock industry and the most practised of all other livestock enterprise. It has contributed and is still contributing to the income of resource poor smallholder farmers”, he said.

Professor Adediran stressed that in addition to this, improved poultry production in the co will also contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria, and reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.

“This workshop is timely and in line with the Federal Government initiative of empowering the youth to reduce the unemployment crisis in Nigeria through poultry production.

Also at the event was Professor Adeboye Omole, Head of Programme, Trypanolerant Livestock Improvement Programme, of the agricultural research institute.
