First modernized grazing reserve, the Bobbi Grazing Reserve in Niger State is set to be opened soon as Niger State Government finalizes arrangements to run the large expanse land grazing field for herdsmen.
The state government has since gazetted the establishment of twenty one grazing reserves and worked on their infrastructures, including water sources, established school for children of nomads, built a primary health care centre amongst several other amenities and structures within the restricted grazing fields for use by the nomads and their families.
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello said while speaking with Chief Audu Ogbe, the Minister of Agriculture, that the Bobbi Grazing Reserve is set for work soon.
The Bobbi grazing reserve when opened would be on record as the first grazing reserve reactivated and put back to use.
The grazing reserve occupies over 350,000 hectares of arable land with good pasture fields, water body sources for both human and flock to ensure that pastoralist families enjoy their lives.
The reserve is located at Bobbi village of Mariga local government council of Niger state.
Governor Sani Bello who paid a courtesy visit to the Minister in his office, intimated him that the grazing field earmarked for grazing of large flock is expected to stem the frequencies of clashes and confrontations between farmers and herders over encroachment into crop fields.
In 2017, the state government gazetted 21 grazing fields as reserves in parts of the state to be set aside for grazing by pastoralist Fulani herders.
The governor said the state government was determined to ensure ensure that the comfort and wellbeing of Fulani pastoralists were guaranteed in view of their immense socio economic contributions to the state.
The Minister, Chief Ogbe applauded the determination of Niger state government in providing the grazing reserve and expressed optimism that the vexed issue of clashes and altercations between farmers and Fulani pastoralists would be addressed with the coming into being of the Bobbi grazing reserve.
