Professor Rabi’u S. Adamu of Institute For Agricultural Research (IAR) Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has advised government to provide funds for pest control to save farmers from losing their expected 18m metric tonnes of maize this year from the fall army worms problems.
He stated this during his presentation titled “A  new invasive pest:A threat to maize production in Nigeria ” held at the Institute’s conference hall.
According to him, the 130.000 dollars grant by FAO is ending in September and government must take over to avoid losses in that direction.
The Crop and Soil Protection Professor said that anything that affects agriculture, affects the economic growth of the country.
He advised the Institute to seek for direct funds from donor agencies instead of collaborating with the Institutes who engage their services of IAR experienced researchers.
In his remarks, the Executive Director IAR, Professor  Ibrahim Umar Abubakar said, in the last two years, pests have been devastating crops in Nigeria which affect farming qualities and made farmers record heavy losses at the end of the farming season.
The Director emphasized that IAR must blow it’s trumpet for the authorities and international agencies to know what the institute is doing and what  can be done in terms of research and development plan.
Prof. Ibrahim Umar Abubakar gave a standing order to the department in the institute to prepare for their internal presentation as a  challenge and a step forward like what crop protection department did.
