NDE Strives to curb unemployment trend in Nigeria

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has said that it will continue to strive in the provision of employment opportunities to the teeming unemployed youth to meet the demands of present unemployment situation despite dwindling resources.
The Acting Director-General of the Directorate, Mr. Kunle Obayan while giving the assurance, said that NDE has been conceptualizing new employment creation schemes targeted at new diverse groups.
One of those groups, he said, is the School – To – Work scheme that has been piloted in some selected states of the federation with JSS2 to SS2 secondary school students as the initial target group of the scheme.
Obayan, at the 2016 Enhancing the Employability of Graduate Attachment programme beneficiaries three-day workshop opened in Bauchi Wednesday, said the initiative is aimed at imparting vocational skills on the students as part of their schools’ curricula.
He said that “Smart Farmer” is another scheme recently embarked upon as a cutting-edge IT-based interactive information and communication system providing agricultural intelligence, reliable date of high quality, timely and cost effective resulting in accurate statistical and demographical information.
Mr. kunle Obayan explained that the scheme is designed to provide employment to the unemployed youths, linking sellers and buyers, and applying ICT in agriculture thereby adding value to the farmers.
The Director-General who spoke through the Bauchi state coordinator of the Directorate, Abubakar Mohammed Jamo, recalled that previous GAP recorded tremendous success as regards set targets and goals.
According to him, a good number of GAP beneficiaries gained permanent employment in various establishments they are attached to, while others used gathered experience to gain employment elsewhere.
He stated that the current innovation is aimed at eliminating any gap in workplaces competences of the GAP attaches’ participation in workplace of the various organizations to adequately equip them to face the competition of seeking for employment in already saturated labour market.
The training workshop on enhancing employability of GAP beneficiaries is designed to provide skills and personal attributes for the beneficiaries as part of the innovations by the NDE to be in tune with evolving technological advancement and meeting with current realities.
Obayan urged workshop participants to take their training seriously and grasp all aspects of the packages to optimize the opportunity made available to them, as well as foster a culture of continuous improvement.
The Graduate Attachment Programme which initially was Graduate Placement Programme which commenced shortly after the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) establishment in 1987 has under the period under review permanently fixed hundreds of thousands of unemployed University graduates in various establishments.
