Mother of two hit by stray bullet in Zaria

A Stray bullet hit a mother of two, Maryam Abubakar of Layin Sarki, Tudun-Wada, Zaria in many places of her body on Wednesday evening in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Our correspondent in the area revealed that the victim was responding to treatment at Al-Madina Hospital, GRA, Zaria.
An eye witness and husband to the victim, Malam Musa Bawa told Newsmen in Zaria on Thursday that the incident happened at Hajiya Kaka Mai-Waina’s house, Layin Sarki, Tudun-Wada, Zaria.
He said: “The incident happened on Wednesday evening at about 6:00p.m at my mother in-law’s residence, Hajiya Kaka Mai-Waina at Tudun-Wada.”
According to him, “during Sallah period, my wife, her siblings and some of their relations used to converge at the house to celebrate Sallah and use the period to see one another”. He said they were in the upstairs of the house “when policemen pursued some thugs who ran close to the house, only for those behind her to see the victim slumped,” he said.
Bawa said the victim was hit in eight different places and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
“As I am talking to you, four pints of blood had been transfused into her because she lost lot of blood before the doctors came to her rescue.”
 
When contacted, the spokes person of Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Aliyu Usman confirmed the incident.
 
He however said investigation showed that the act was not committed by the Police, saying, “Medical report from the doctor attending to the victim indicates that the bullet removed is not our own.
 
“The woman was hit in eight different places by pellets emanating from either den gun or double barrel. Remember, police don’t use gun powder,” he assured.
 
Usman assured that investigation was still on and appealed to people in the area to assist the police with vital information that would lead to arrest of perpetrators of the act.
 
Our correspondent revealed that the intervention of security personnel including vigilante groups in Zaria was necessary in view of the fact that during Sallah festivals some notorious gang carrying dangerous weapons used to terrorise people or attack one another because of difference of ideology.
 
In a related development, Thursday at about 11.00 am a group of thugs numbering hundreds barricaded kwarin Dan Goma along Gaskiya road carrying dangerous weapons, smashing peoples’ vehicles passing through the road and beating people they come across.
With the timely intervention of Mobile Police, the situation was brought under control.
The Police are yet to comment on the situation at the time of filing this report.
