A 57yr old mortuary attendant at the University College Hospital, (UCH),Ibadan was on Monday arraigned before an Oyo state Magistrate court sitting in Ibadan for allegedly stealing a human skull from the corpse kept at the UCH mortuary.
New Nigerian gathered that the mortuary attendant identified as Muritala Raimi was arrested after allegedly decapitated the remains of the yet to be identified corpse deposited at the mortuary.
Raimi after allegedly cutting the head was said to have concealed it in a bag but was intercepted while attempting to escape from the hospital by security guards on duty.
The mortuary attendant was immediately handed over to the police at the nearby Yemetu Police Station, Ibadan.
Arraigning Raimi on a two-count charge of stealing and misconduct,
the Prosecutor,SP Adeniyi Odebiyi, said “Muritala Raimi, aged 57, on the 15th May, 2017 at about 05: 30pm at UCH Ibadan in Ibadan magisterial district did steal human skull inside UCH mortuary and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 3 of the criminal code cap 38 vol. 11 laws of Oyo State of Nigeria.
“That you Muritala Raimi on the same date, place in the aforementioned magisterial district did misconduct with regard to corpse by decapitating a corpse deposited at UCH mortuary and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 242 of the criminal code cap 38 vol. 11 laws of Oyo State”.
Raimi however pleaded not guilty to the two-count charges.
Magistrate Akanni Monsurat granted the accused person bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, and that one of the sureties must be a member of the family,
The mortuary attended was later moved to the Agodi Prison remand as he was unable to meet the bail conditions as at the time of filing this report.
Magistrate Akanni Monsurat later adjourned to the case till May 5, 2017 for further hearing.
