Maverick nonagenarian and Bida based multi polygamist, Muhammad Bello Masaba has debunked the rumours of his death saying he is hale, hearty and even feels stronger at 86.

The old man was rumored to have died at the weekend but as the news filtered through, the man spoke and said the news of his death was the handiwork of ‘enemies’ who think they could scuttle the wish of Allah concerning his life.

Masaba the enigma became a media sensation for publicly declaring that he is married to 86 wives. And as if that was not controversial enough, he shocked the Muslim world when he asserted that he speaks directly, on one- on-one with God just as he claims to have received divine directives from Allah who sanctions his actions as a mega polygamist.

Masaba as he is fondly called, defied all pressures and entreaties from renown Muslim clerics, tradional rulers, Islamic Jurisprudants and the Niger State Government to renounce his stance on several issues considered unislamic and unconventional.

Consequently, he came headlong in clashes with all those who considered him as an aberant, delinquent religious misfit and attempted to banish him from Bida on several occasions without success.

The rumours of his demise had turned his house into a Mecca of a sort as many curious people thronged to the Masaba Quarters to confirm if it is true.

The controversial super polygamist who is also said to possess some “supernatural” healing powers, is also seen as a potent Marabout with thousands of faithful clients. Many of the women he is married to were said to be his clients who got entangled in his web when they sought for some “spiritual assistance and prayers” from him.

His rare polygamous status and supernatural claims had at several times in the past pitched him against some Islamists, the traditional institutions and the state government leading to his eventual imprisonment in 2007/2008.

While reacting to his death, Masaba debunked the rumour and described it as “April’s Fool joke” in October. The rumour  of the man’s demise sneaked in from his Masaba Quarters in his country home, Bida but steadily cascaded to the state capital, Minna and beyond before midnight on Saturday.

But by Sunday afternoon, the noneogenarian in a telephone interview said he was ‘alive, hale and heathy and even feels stronger”.

To add to the lists of some of the thorny issues around his neck, the ancestry and roots of the controversial Islamic cleric have remained controversial as some indigenes, senior citizens of the ancient Bida emirate denied his claim to have come from the Masaba ruling house of Bida.

The old man who has 165 children from his wives, never seem to give a hoot. He said of his rumoured demise, “i have heard the vicious rumour too. But Allah is greater than all the perpetrators of this wicked rumour”.

He however conceded that death is an inevitable end to every human being even as he agreed that he will die at Allah’s appointed time. “Death is the ultimate end for all. But I am alive. I am not dead. Allah’s divine assignment must be carried out. I will fulfil my days and my divine assignment on earth” he said.

According to Masaba, “I am now with all my children and other well wishers, some of them also heard the rumour. As you can see, i have been attending to people since the wicked rumour was sparked off.”

“We have been receiving calls from all over the country since the enemies planted the fake death news of Baba” said a source within the big compound that housed the the old man and his legion of family members.
