Plans had been concluded by the Lagos State Government in readiness to celebrate 50 years of the state creation.
In a statement by the Senior Special Adviser to the State Governor on Sports, Adeboye Adeyinka Anthony said that activities leading to the celebration will be carnival like even as he commended the state governor for his giant strides in developing sports in the state.
He further explained that the just concluded second edition of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon helped in showcasing the mega city status of the state as well as improving the tourist potentials of the State of Excellence.
“I’m particularly happy with what Governor Ambode is doing in re-positioning sports in the state. The recent Lagos City Marathon is a testimony to what the governor is doing to increase the tourists’ potentials of the state. The marathon was also rated internationally as one of the 10 best organized marathons in the World which shows that Lagos is working.
“It is also important to state that everybody including the Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, the Director General and my humble self and other sports administrators in the state are working assiduously to ensure that sports activities lined up for Lagos at 50 is memorable”, he stated.
On plans by Lagos State Government to take over the National Stadium, Surulere, he noted that it will help in creating job opportunities for the youths and put the stadia back to use.
“Lagos taking over National Stadium will lead to job creation. Kaduna and Enugu State Governments are now managing their stadias and as such Lagos deserves to manage the national stadium.
On the move of Nigerian players to the Chinese League, he described it as a good development, pointing out that those who initially castigated Obafemi Martins for the move have now discovered that he took the right decision just as he stated that Martins still has a role to play in the Super Eagles.
“When Obafemi Martins went to China, a lot of people taught he was finished but am happy that he has been vindicated because younger players such as Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo and Carlos Tevez have all gone there which shows that once you have the passion for the game, you can play anywhere.
