Labour gives KGSG 7 days ultimatum on staff screening
By; Adama John, Lokoja.
Organised Labour Leaders in Kogi State have given a 7-day ultimatum to  the nascent administration of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the governor of the state to reverse the order given to the Permanent Secretaries to embark on screening of workers before salary is paid or risks resumption of strike action by the state workforce.
While briefing journalists in Lokoja, the labour leaders led by the Nigerian Labour Congress Chairman, Comrade Onuh J. Edoka said that any attempt by the Bello led administration to go ahead with the screening exercise that was not discussed with the labour leaders will be vehemently resisted.
Explaining further, Comrade Edoka said that the Labour group met with the governor on his prompting on February 2 and thereafter agreed to call off the 6-week strike action after he has promised to pay the workers one month (October) salary.
He stressed further that the terms of agreement which included payment of the salary have not been met but has gone ahead to take a position to implement what was not discussed in the meeting.
The labour leaders maintained that they are not against the governor embarking on verification of the state workforce, saying that the government never canvassed that before them during the last meeting.
“We were surprise to note the mandate given to the Permanent Secretaries with a format to screen workers without our inputs over the modality and related terms. We agreed to call off the strike for his administration to hit ground running, not knowing that he will backstab us soonest. This is not the kind of change we are yearning for”, comrade Edoka expressed.
The labour leaders who said that the timing of the exercise is very wrong, for workers have been down for four months without pay advised workers to ignore the screening exercise by refusing to collect the form from any agent of the government, adding that the exercise is with strings attached.
It could be recalled that the state workforce that have been on strike since December for non payment of salary resumed work on Tuesday after governor Bello agreed to pay them one month out of the 4-month arrears of salary owed workers.
