Kasamu: Court of Appeal President disbands Appeal panel

By; Bayo Akamo, Ibadan
The planned hearing of the appeal filed by the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District of Ogun state, Senator Buruji Kashamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the judgment of the Ogun State election petition tribunal which nullified his election victory was halted yesterday by the dissolution of the three-man panel initially set up to hear the appeal.
Counsel to Senator Kasamu and those of the All Progressives Congress (APC), journalists and other stakeholders in the cases arrived the court complex at the new Adeoyo area of Ibadan, but shortly after all have taken their seats, an official of the Appeal Court, entered and announce the dissolution of the Appeal panel to the dismay of those within the Court.
The court official informed the counsel and others that the directive on the dissolution of the Appeal panel was from the President of the Court of Appeal and that a new panel had been reconstituted to handle the case.
According to the court official, all the concerned parties in the matter would be duly informed of the new date for the commencement of the hearing of the case.
New Nigerian reliably gathered that the disbandment of the Appeal panel might not be unconnected with a two page petition advertised in two national dailies on Monday, 23/11/15, alleging likely “bias of the Appeal panel” and “alleged compromise of justice by members of the Appeal panel if it(earlier panel) was allowed to handle the appeal”.
The published petition which was addressed to the President, Court of Appeal, Abuja, was sponsored by a nongovernmental organization known as “Truth and Justice Initiative”.
