Kaduna Pension Reform Bill pass into Law

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has passed into Law the bill to repeal Kaduna Pension Reform law 2007 (As Amended).
The Bill which seeks to strengthen a contributory pension scheme for public service and Local Government Councils in the state and matters connected therewith, aims at establishing a consolidated pension scheme regulations that will put smiles on the faces of Kaduna State Pensioners.
The Speaker of the House, Honourable Abdullahi Shagali made it plain that “the objective of the law is to establish a uniform set of rules and regulations and standard administration for the payment of retirement benefits of the civil servants in the state as well as to make provisions for the smooth operations for the contributory pension scheme to ensure that every person who works in the public service of the state receives his benefits as at when due”.
Shagali also said the law will be applicable to all who work in the state public service which would enable retirees take care of themselves at old age.
The law also provides that a minimum of thirteen per cent of monthly emolument would be contributed by the employer while a minimum of seven per cent would be contributed by the employee from their monthly emolument towards the scheme.
The law however exempts public servants who will be under any pension scheme existing before December 31st, 2016.
It also provides that no retiree would be allowed to make withdrawal from the scheme unless he/she attains the age of fifty years.
Speaking after the passage of the Law, Honourable Danladi Angulu Kwasu representing Zango Kataf constituency in the State House of Assembly expressed optimism that the law touches various aspects of pension and will ensure prompt payment of workers entitlements after retirement.
