Principals of secondary schools in Oyo state under the aegis of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) on Tuesday apologized to the state government on behalf of principals, teachers and students of public secondary schools in the state over the June 6 violent protest by some secondary school students in Ibadan.
ANCOPSS in a statement jointly signed by its Oyo State President Pastor Ranti Obafumiso and Secretary, Deacon Mathew Ogunkunle respectively made available to journalists in Ibadan dissociated its members from any group or association that might have allegedly instigated the students for the protest.
According to the Principals, “the incident threatened the peace and security of the state and endangered the lives of the students who participated in the breach of peace and affront on constituted authority”.
“The ANCOPPS wishes to tender its unreserved apology to the Oyo State Government on behalf of all principals, teachers and students of all public secondary schools in the state on the violent incident that happened on June 6, 2016. The incident threatened the peace and security of the state and endangered the lives of the students who participated in the breach of peace an affront on constituted authority,”it said.
Condemning the protest, the Principals emphasized that “ANCOPPS has always been an ambassador and advocate of moral uprightness and good conduct and therefore dissociates itself from any group or association that might have instigated the students to take part in the ugly incident.”
ANCOPPS while assuring Governor Ajimobi of its members total support and cooperation for his administration, added that “the confederation pleaded with the government to accept its apology”.
It will be recalled that Governor Ajimobi last week vowed not to reopen all the 17 secondary schools still being shut down in Ibadan after the reopening of all public schools in the state until their Principals and students apologised to the state government over the June 6 protest.
Some public secondary schools in Ibadan on June 6 took to the streets protesting the alleged plan by the state government to sell off some of the public secondary schools in the state.
During the protest, some public and private property, including the state headquarters of the All Progressives Congress, Remembrance Arcade opposite the Government House and private cars, were reportedly damaged by the students.
