It’s time to end vandals’ activities in Nigeria -NSCDC CG
By; Bayo Akamo, Ibadan.
The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Abdullahi G. Muhammadu has said it is time to end the activities of vandals on national critical assets before they destroy the country.
Muhammadu who handed down the order in his end-of-the year message to the officers and men of the Asset Monitoring Unit of the Zone F Command of NSCDC comprising Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Oyo State Commands vowed that there will be no going back on war against vandals by the Corps.
Speaking through the NSCDC acting Deputy Commandant General in charge of Critical infrastructure, Mr. Godwin Agim, the Commandant General while tasking  men of the Corps to rise up to the challenges ahead, pointed out that the vandals by their activities are becoming major threat to the economic development of Nigeria if not checked on time.
The NSCDC CG stressed that the Corps in its determination to tackle those specializing in vandalising national critical assets particularly oil pipelines, electricity and communication cables for personal gains, resolved to setting up the Asset Monitoring Unit “to step up its efforts in bringing the perpetrators to book”.
According to the CG in the message signed by the Asset Monitoring commandant for zone F, Mr. Solomon Olasupo, as at the end of November, 2015, NSCDC in the zone had arrested suspects with no fewer than 40 trucks, some hundreds of petrol kegs and drums, motorcycles, pumping machines, various types of plumbing materials, generating sets, pipes as well as other sundry materials such as drilling and cutting implements.
“In Ondo and Oyo States alone, about 30 trucks were in the custody of the NSCDC with several other vehicles and various working implements which were being used by these undesirable elements before they were caught. We are declaring a total war and there is no going back”, he said
The NSCDC boss added that about 100 cases were instituted against suspected vandals by the NSCDC in various courts across the south western part of Nigeria, while about ten cases have been concluded with the convicts forfeiting their seized vehicles to the federal government while some of them had been auctioned by the appropriate authorities consequent on the court approval.
While charging parents to monitor their children irrespective of their locations as many young persons left home under the pretext of going out to do legitimate jobs but some end up working with saboteurs, he said the vehicles and other valuables used for such nefarious activities would be forfeited by the federal government while the same will be auctioned.
“When vandals end up in jail and their families have no access to their ill-gotten properties, these will continue to serve as deterrents to others who may be thinking of working against their states is a profitable venture that has no repercussion.”
The CG then lauded the NSCDC personnel for their vigilance that led to these feats, assuring them of federal government’s resolve to adequately reward commitment and loyalty while those found to have compromise and corrupt would be punished.
