In its bid to step up development, the Karatudu community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State has embarked on self help and concerted effort to build a bridge.
This was disclosed by the community head, Mai Unguwa Joshua Bawa at the project in a chart with New Nigerian Newspapers.
Bawa narrated that the project which is ongoing was conceptualised and funded by the community through a house to house contribution and borrowed funds.The youth he said also rendered their share of contribution through volunteer labour.
The Mai Unguwa further stressed that the community had to borrow funds and procure building materials on credit owing to the capital intensiveness of the project.
He lamented government’s negligence of the area and called on the media to publicise their plight while he sought government’s intervention on the self help project and other projects.
“I hereby utilise this special privilege to make a case for the Karatudu community and call on the state government to intervene on this project and engineer it to completion especially that the community has demonstrated its self efforts” he pleaded.
He futher called on the State government to expidite action and and resume construction of the other bridge project it started but eventually abandoned, lamenting that the area is now accessed through longer and unmotorable routes.
Mai Unguwa Bawa further explained that the the bridge project which has already gulped 2.7 million naira is not the only stride of the community’s development efforts, but they have graded roads which are still bad and need government’s intervention to standardise them. The residents also installed a transformer at the cost of one million naira but need more for proper electrification.
Culverts and drainages were also part of the propjects executed by the community he recalled. He said the records the public often mistake the communities efforts as government projects.
Efforts to meet the Community Association Chairman, Mr Adegun for his comments proved abortive as he was said to be attending another function elsewhere.
