The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Olatoye Durosinmi has expressed joy over Friday’s Court judgment that sentenced Uduak Akpan to death by hanging.
CP Durosinmi in statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Odiko MacDon, stated that the judgment which was delivered by a High Court Judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang has vindicated the Police in the matter.
The statement reads, “We received with great delight the news of the conviction of Mr. Uduak Frank Akpan, the notorious rapist and murderer. The suspect who was arrested by the Police Command on April 30, 2021 in connection with the raping and murder of Miss Iniubong Umoren has today, August the 4th, 2022 been convicted and sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court, vindicating the stance of the Police.”
The CP applauded the operatives of the command for the swift arrest of Uduak and a thorough investigations on the case and the Judiciary for their dexterity and the good people of Akwa Ibom State for their patience and resilience.
He assured that the Police Command in the state remains committed to sparing no resources in ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes and other forms of criminalities in the State are brought to book within the shortest possible time.
It would be recalled, Akpan, was standing trial at High Court in Uyo, the state capital for raping and murdering a University of Uyo graduate, Miss Iniubong Umoren, whom he tricked to his father’s compound on a pretext of giving her a job.
Also standing trial were his father, Mr. Frank Akpan and Sister, Bassey-Anwan Frank Akpan on charge of accessory to the said crime.
Uduak, who after killing the girl, buried her in a shallow grave in his father’s compound was arrested by police upon receiving complaint from the deceased sister.
This trial judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang on Thursday, sentenced Uduak to life imprisonment for rape and to death by hanging for murder, while his father and sister were discharged and acquitted for want of evidence on the charge against them before the court.
Police reaction however, came on the ground of sentiments and rumours that made a round in the state, alleging the Police of secretly releasing Uduak from its custody.
Before the High Court ruling, the rumours and sentiments kept trailing in public by peddlers, even when Uduak, his father and sister had shortly after their arrest and investigations, were arraigned in court, that later remanded them in Nigeria Correctional Centre while the trial lasted.
