A National Assembly member representing Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan has emerged the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) for the state.

The 2022 Electoral Act as amended, stipulates that when a candidate voluntarily withdraws from an election, he or she must be substituted through a fresh primary within a specified time provided in the Act.

OBA, who is the chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), thanked the party faithful and his teeming supporters for what he described as the “overwhelming confidence” reposed in him to  lead Akwa Ibom and transform it to a land of prosperity, peace and justice for all.

Aside from INEC, the fresh primary was also witnessed by the national and state officers of YPP, other leaders and members of Akwa UbokAbasi Campaign Organisation – his campaign structure, family members, friends and associates from across party lines in the state.

Before the fresh governorship primary, the party has within the last two weeks conducted fresh primary in 18 state constituencies including districts of the state where former candidates also withdrew their candidacy for people who joined the party lately but have better strength and capacity to win the various seats for party in the state.

New Nigerian Newspapers in Uyo also observed that YPP, which birthed in Akwa Ibom less than seven years ago, is fast growing with membership strength weeks after OBA decamped to the party from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The development is unsettling the ruling PDP and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) whose membership are declining by day for the emerging YPP ahead of 2023 general elections.
