Following the lingering industrial action embarked by members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since February 14, 2022 to drive home their demands from the  Federation Government, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State,  has been totally deserted as no single student no lecturer was sighted  around the school environment, while traders and few students met outside the campus were counting losses over the ongoing strike.

In a visit to AE-FUNAI over the industrial action, the entire school environment was empty as both the academic and non academic staff deserted the school environment, only few security personnel were seen at different locations.

It was also observed that economic and social activities within the premises of the school have been grounded because of low patronage.

Most lecturers and students were no where to be found, while most lecture theaters and classrooms were under lock and keys, with  part of the school premises defaced by overgrown weed.

Some of the students who were doing business around the school environment, called on federal government to heed to the demands of ASUU in bringing an end to the industrial action.

Some of the business owners and commercial transport workers like Elom Cynthia, Abraham Chinonso, Igbe Chisom amongst others,   expressed bitterness over the strike, lamenting that it has adversely affected their daily source of income as there is low patronage from the few students around the campus.

Reacting to the ASUU Strike, the university’s SUG President, Comrade Jerry Okafor expressed dissatisfaction over the strike, asking  why university strike has become an annual occurrence in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

He therefore, appealed to the Federal Government and ASUU to settle their differences for the interest of students to avoid being used as instruments of violence during the forthcoming election.

All  efforts made to speak with the ASUU Chairman of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, and his SSANU counterpart, proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
