Ahead of the 64th Nigerian Independence day celebration slated for Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State Command, CP Ishola Olanrewaju Olawale has warned against any form of disturbance or breach of public order, vowing that it would not be tolerated under any circumstance.
CP Olawale, who spoke on Friday at a stakeholders meeting at the POWA Event Centre, Oduduwa, Ikeja,reiterated that protesters are expected to carry out their activities peacefully, with respect for the rights of other citizens.
The Lagos Police boss noted that the stakeholders meeting convened in conjunction with heads of other security agencies in Lagos, was meant to discuss security arrangements for the upcoming October 1st Independence Day celebrations and planned protests by some groups.
He reiterated that protesters are expected to carry out their activities peacefully, with respect for the rights of other citizens.
Addressing the gathering comprised of student bodies, security agencies, DSS, labour leaders, traditional rulers, national Union of road transport workers (NURTW), Nigerian Bar association(NBA) and Journalists, CP Olawale emphasized that the core objective of the meeting is to ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders during the Independence Day celebrations.
According to him, the Lagos State Police Command is fully committed to maintaining law and order, while safeguarding the rights of citizens to freely express themselves in line with the law.
He expressed his appreciation for the seamless collaboration between the Press and the Police Force since his assumption of office, noting that it has been integral to promoting public safety and security in Lagos.
The Police Commissioner acknowledged the press as an invaluable partner in promoting effective policing through transparency and timely communication.
He urged the media to continue their partnership in ensuring accurate reporting.
CP Olawale assured that the Lagos State Police Command, in conjunction with other security agencies, is fully prepared to provide the highest level of security for all activities slated for October 1st.
Speaking further, the Police Commissioner called on residents to go about their activities without fear, as adequate measures have been put in place to prevent any form of disruption.
The meeting concluded with a consensus on maintaining a safe and peaceful atmosphere throughout the state, underscoring the shared responsibility between the police, media, and the public in safeguarding Lagos during this period and beyond.
