Inability of states to conduct council elections worrisome – Senator Wakili
By; Mohammed Kawu, Bauchi.
Senator Ali Wakili, representing Bauchi South district has expressed worry over the continued delay by some state governments in the country to conduct Local Government elections in their respective domains.
The Senator warned that this constitutional breach by some states for not conducting council polls would soon attract the legislation of the Senate to compel them to do so.
“I’m sure sooner or later some of us will bring this issue to the floor of the House, because we have gone round through invisible means to impress on the party to ensure that all APC Governors put in democratically elected Local Governments”.
Wakili, who was fielding questions in Bauchi Wenesday said, “I will be part and parcel of those ensuring that there is democratically elected Local Government Councils in place”.
He recalled that the now ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had during the 2015 electioneering campaigns, castigated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for not conducting local government polls.
“I know when we were campaigning in 2015 from the presidential to all other elective offices, we were castigating the PDP for not conducting Local Government elections”, Wakili said.
“We did criticized the PDP during the 2015 electioneering campaigns for not holding the Local Government elections and I don’t think we are going to fall into the same trap”, he frowned.
Senator Ali Wakili therefore described as very sad and unfortunate the inability of some APC Governors to conduct Local Government elections in their respective states since assumption of office in May 2015.
It would be recalled that the APC led administration of Governor Mohammed Abubakar in Bauchi had since its inception in May 2015 been running the Local Government councils through the tutelage of caretaker committees.
