President Mohammadu Buhari on Thursday declared that he is ready to chase out the spirit of corruption in Nigeria as it has almost crippled Nigeria economy.
The President stated this in Ibadan at the 68th Founders Day and 2016 convocation of the University of Ibadan held at the institution’s International Conference Centre where honorary degrees were conferred on Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Prof Niyi Osundare and Chief Bode Amao.
Speaking through the Director of Tertiary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Hajiya Fatima, President Buhari said there is the urgent need for all and sundry to join in the on going fight against corruption in the country, saying, corruption has almost cripple Nigeria economy.
He emphasized that the present administration in the country is determined to fight corruption in line with its zero tolerance for corruption adding that the Universities too should join in the fight against corruption.
President Buhari while stating that Federal government is set to increase budget allocation to the nation’s education sector especially to the tertiary institutions tasked the public universities in Nigeria to key into the change mantra of the present administration.
Speaking further, President Buhari then charged Universities in Nigeria to be more entrepreneurial in their approach, saying,”it is a fact that our education system is undervalued but government is working assiduously towards ensuring improvement.”
“As part of efforts of this administration to address burning issues of youth unemployment in the country, the nation’s tertiary institutions must seek to become more entrepreneurial in their outlook with an industry driven curriculum development and conscious effort towards engaging the industry in this exercise” he said.
The President stressed that it was unfortunate that the present standard of education in Nigeria has succeeded in creating three classes of Nigerians- a minority that is well educated, majority that is poorly educated and those without education at all.
In his remark, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Idowu Olayinka  declared that the university is being repositioned to compete favourably with the ‘globally acclaimed best universities’ adding that with its dwindling allocation from the federal government, the university has invested in the development of its human resources for quality teaching and cutting edge research; infrastructure for a conducive teaching and learning environment as well as building a time tested academic culture and tradition.
