President Institute of Chartered Accounting of Nigeria, ICAN Mr. Deacon Titus-Soetan has said the institute trained and certified over 40, 000 accountants across the country.
He announced this shortly before the ground breaking ceremony of a 300-capacity ultramodern lecture theatre, donated by the institute to the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, at the main campus, Samaru, Kaduna State.
“It is part of our mandate to enhance the growth and development of accounting education in the country, thereby contributing to national growth and development.
“In view of this, we have trained and certified over 40,000 chartered accountants across the country who have made enormous contributions to the socioeconomic growth and development of the country.
The President who stressed that the body is committed to excellence, said the institute has established Accounting Research Foundation in an effort to expand the frontiers of accounting education in Nigeria.
He promised to complete the construction of the theater within 16 months, dedicated to Accounting Department, ABU, Zaria.
The ABU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Garba lauded the efforts of the institute and described the gesture as “gigantic donation” that would remain indelible in the history of the university.
He said that lack of fund was one major factor that pushed the university to reach out to corporate organisations soliciting for support on facilities that would enhance growth and development of education.
“The university has approached ICAN for support in the areas of infrastructure as well as capacity building; it is worthwhile to say we are honoured and privileged to enjoy this laudable project.
“The department of accounting in ABU had over the years produced high quality manpower across the industries as well as government establishments.
“We must therefore, appreciate the institute, being the pioneer chartered body responsible for ensuring best accounting practice and auditing in the country,” he said.
He also appealed to individuals and professional bodies for more support for the university to further improve educational standard in the country.
