I won’t compete with Gov Ajimobi as a Minister – Shittu.
By;  BAYO AKAMO, Ibadan.
The Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu has declared that he is not a Minister because he wants to compete and would never compete with Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State.
The Minister stated this while speaking at a grand reception organized in his honour by his Committee of friends held at the Kakanfo Conference Centre, Ibadan over the weekend.
Barrister Shittu pointed out that as far as he is concerned, there cannot be two governors in Oyo state, hence the need for him to be  loyal to Governor Ajimobi’s government and the people of the State.
“My Governor and leader, I want to say it here publicly that I will be loyal to your government and the people of Oyo State. I want you to see me as your representative. I am not a Minister because I want to compete with you. There cannot be two governors in our state. We should be playing complementary roles. You should also remember that all my three wives are from Ibadan. Whatever assignment you want me to carry out in Abuja, I will dutifully comply. Anytime you come to Abuja, I will be available for you. Our duty is to serve the people of our state,” he said.
The Minister emphasized that the time has come for Nigerians to brace up for the task of remaking Nigeria, adding, “we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the task of remaking Nigeria.
“We must collectively rise up to the challenges of the present which are many and enormous and make Nigeria great again. Our little drops of individual contributions will surely make an ocean of change. Our people have spoken and loudly too in a language reminiscent of President Obama’s admonition that ‘to those who cling to power through corruption and deceit, and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist. The task of revamping a ravaged and faltering economy, feeding the starved bodies and hungry minds, rebuilding broken bridges and infrastructures, fixing our educational system, hospitals and other public institutions is not one for a single minister or political official, but rather for the government which aggregates the sum of our collective dreams and aspirations,” he said.
Barrister Shittu stressed further that on his part, he has resolve “to re-dedicate myself and all my God-given talents and resources to the realization of the noble goals and vision that the present government has presented to Nigerians in the shortest possible time because time is not on our side”.
Speaking further, the Minister said Nigerians “are rightly impatient to see things work again, and they cannot be blamed,” saying, “we must therefore be in a hurry to right the wrongs of the past and flicker the torch of change through the dark alleys and crevices of governance.”
Shittu then thanked organizers of the programme “for deeming it fit to honour one of their own. I wish to say that this honour is not for me alone but to millions of Nigerians who made ‘change’ possible during the last general elections”.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi while speaking said he never wanted Barrister Adebayo Shittu’s name to be on the ministerial nominee list from Oyo state, saying, “when news got to me that Barrister Shittu was the one picked to be Minister from Oyo State, I did not like it. So, I went to the President to complain that this man you selected is not on the same page with me politically. Afterwards, Barrister Shittu came with elders and some religious clerics and we sorted out our differences.
“Barrister, you are a good man, please, do not allow anybody to create or generate enemies for you. Do not allow people to make you an enemy to anybody. I don’t ever pray to become the President of Nigeria. It is the gubernatorial seat I had eyes on, and God has answered my prayer. I got it twice” he said.
