Senate Minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has distant himself from the allegation leading to the arrest of Justice Inyang Okoro of Supreme Court and others by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The DSS last week arrested seven judges including two justices of the Supreme Court in a multiple raids over allegations of bribery and corruption.
Senator Akpabio who is the former governor of Akwa Ibom state, has in statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Anietie Ekong described the media reports linking him to the allegation as “spurious, baseless and false”.
Report making rounds on the social media said that Senator Akpabio bribed Supreme Court judges to rock the 2015 Akwa Ibom state governorship election petitions in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party flag bearer, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.
Akpabio’s SA on Media however in the statement said, “We wish to state most emphatically that Senator Godswill Akpabio is in no way involved in the alleged bribery of Supreme Court judges and so has no reason whatsoever to be scared over the arrest of the judges.”
The statement accused All Progressive Congress (APC) of urging President Muhammadu Bahari in February this year to probe to the Supreme Court judgment which declared Mr. Emmanuel as the winner of the 2015 Akwa Ibom state governorship election.
Accusing APC in the state of sponsoring the media report against him, Senator Akpabio denied of ever having contact with any judge during the matter with intention to offer bribe, adding that he went to court to protect his reputation.
According to the statement, “Senator Akpabio, as a democrat, believes in the sanctity of the electoral process and so has not been involved in bribing any judge as it not in his character to do so, His election as a Senator which was seen as a no contest after a sterling performance as Governor of Akwa Ibom state was widely held as free and fair.
Senator Akpabio like many other Nigerians learnt of the news of the arrest of the judges/justices on Saturday while he was in Inua, Edo state when he along with the Senate President and other Senators attended the wedding of the daughter of their colleague, Senator Clifford Ordia.
It is most disingenuous and reprehensible for Akwa Ibom state APC to attempt to link Senator Akpabio to something he has no knowledge of and impute he was gripped with fear when he was busy celebrating with his colleague on the marriage of his daughter in Inua, Esan Central Local Government of Edo State.
We condemned in very strong terms and advice those who stock in trade and preoccupation is to link Senator Akpabio to every ignominious scheme to desist from such pull-him down syndrome.”
