Former Governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala has declared that he is not in politics for money making but to better the lots of the masses.
Akala stated this in a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Barrister A. B. Ojo and made available to journalists in Ibadan to clarify his recent statement in Abuja that he was happy not winning 2015 gubernatorial election in Oyo State.
The former governor said the statement he made while speaking with journalists after meeting with the top echelons of the All Progressives Congress APC in Abuja is based on the fact that “as a welfarist and a compassionate person”, he cannot imagine how he would feel “when civil servants are not being paid and electoral promises are not fulfilled”.
“My being happy not winning the election as quoted by some section of the media stem from the fact that as a welfarist and a compassionate person, I cannot imagine how I would feel when civil servants are not being paid and electoral promises are not fulfilled .
“I will be greatly traumatized and experience sleepless night as I would exert and overstress myself beyond limit,” he said.
Akala pointed out that “the clarification is important in view of the mis-interpretation, and erroneous insinuation drawn by some commentators including the distinguished Senator Ben Bruce on the social media”.
He added that “for the distinguished Senator Ben Bruce and others to insinuate that money is the major reason why politicians vie for political office is a misinterpretation of his statement”.
He maintained that “as much as it is important for salaries to be paid as and when due and electoral promises fulfilled, it is the availability of funds that could have these achievable,” saying, it is however sad that the present economic situation in the country has put the Governors into a pitiable state.
According to the former Governor, “with the present circumstances, all the Governors must look inward and go extra mile to generate funds and in doing so will have to overstretch, overwork and indeed experience sleepless night to actualize their objectives
“It is therefore to the glory of God that I am not in this situation and the Good book says in all circumstances, we should be grateful and being grateful presupposes happiness wherever you find yourself at any given time”.
