Healthy Babies: Traditional Ruler Advocates Exclusive Breastfeeding

The Emir of Tsafe in Zamfara State, Alhaji Muhammadu Bawa has enjoined the people to encourage mothers to engage in exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months to make the children to grow healthy and able to contribute to nation building.

The Emir gave the advice in his palace on Thursday during an awareness campaign on the importance of Exclusive Breastfeeding as parts of activities to mark the 2018 World Breastfeeding week organized by the Save the Children in collaboration UK aid.

The Emir who was represented by Sarkin Gabas of Tsafe, Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar added  that the society particularly fathers must support and encourage their wives when they give birth to engage in exclusive breastfeeding to make their children more healthier and thereby save themselves from spending money on treatment.

He commended the Save the Children International for the awareness campaign on breastfeeding as well as the Cash transfer scheme to nursing mothers particularly in his emirate and therefore assured of the Emirate’s support to the Save the Children to ensure successful implementation of the programme.

Speaking earlier, the Save the Children International, Tsafe Local Government supervisor, Nura Nahuche said the main cardinal objectives of World Breastfeeding Week 2018 is to Inform, engage and galvanize nursing mothers on the significant of exclusive breastfeeding to their infants for them to have healthy children.

He also called on mothers to ensure personal hygiene during breastfeeding through proper hand washing and cleaning their breast before breastfeeding.

One of the beneficiaries, Malama Hafsat Muhammad Bawa commended the save the children international for its campaign drive on the important of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers.

She said, the cash transfer scheme of the Save the Children has contributed immensely towards helping mother’s to have healthy children, stressing that it also helped to addressed malnutrition problem between nursing mothers and their newborn babies

The theme of this year Breastfeeding week is “Breastfeeding Foundation of Life”.
