Banjoko Oil and Gas Ltd, agreeing to sponsor the National Handball Premier League is a turning point for the development of the game that will translate into further bigger deals to be attracted by the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) as yet another historic feat is recorded.
HFN President, Alhaji Yusuf Dauda expressed this during the media briefing to unveil the 2016 National Handball Premier League held at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium (ABS), Kaduna.
According to him, for almost 10 years, since Malta Guinness stopped sponsoring the Division 1 Championship, Handball activities have not being witnessed much in Nigeria.
Dauda praised the CEO of Banjoko Oil and Gas, Alhaji Yakubu Suleiman (Tafidan Tudunwadan Zaria) for agreeing to sponsor handball’s top flight league in the country, while reminding other corporate organizations willing to sponsor the Division One league not to shy away, as their doors remain open to negotiations.
He explained that a total of 25 teams will feature this season, comprising 13 male and 12 female teams, adding that from next season, it would be trimmed down to 18 teams; 10 male and 8 female.
The HFN President said that this year’s league would be hosted in Kaduna, where all the teams will test each other’s might in a round-robin fixture.
In his remarks, representative of the sponsors, Abubakar Ahmed said that Banjoko is creating a synergy with HFN to take the game of handball to greater heights.
He explained that everything has been put in place to ensure that the 2016 league is held successfully.
