Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi has described as unbefitting of national leader the statement credited to Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state asking Fulanis to leave Ekiti in the wake of incessant clashes between farmers and cattle herders.
He said for a leader like Governor Ayo Fayose to utter such a statement in crisis between farmers and herdsmen is not only divisive and lacking in statesmanship, but also condemnable.
Abubakar, who vividly look worried while reacting to the statement, expressed regret that Nigeria has not been able to find lasting solutions to such clashes that have resulted in the death of hundreds of Nigerian lives in different parts of the country.
The Governor lamented that instead of dialoguing with all stakeholders to address the ugly trend, some leaders were resorting to making divisive public pronouncements.
“In a democracy, provisions have been made for anybody that is aggrieved with anything in the country to seek redress. Instead of resorting to making such public pronouncements, there are laid down laws to follow.
“I am gladdened with efforts of both the Presidency and the National Assembly which is conducting public hearings with a view to putting an end to such incessant and senseless killings”, the Governor said.
He urged leaders to be mindful of their public utterances, especially on matters that bother on national unity and security, stressing that Nigeria is in dire need of everybody’s contributions for it to be great again and its economy bounce back.
Meanwhile, the Governor has granted amnesty to 78 inmates from five prisons of Bauchi, Ningi, Misau Azare and Jama’are in the state.
This followed the approval by the Governor for the resuscitation of the Committee on Administration of Justice under the chairmanship of the State Acting chief Judge, Justice Nangoma Kunaza Hamid.
Other members of the committee include the state attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi, state Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association and the Controller of Prisons who visited the five prisons.
The development, according to a statement signed by the press secretary to the Governor, Abubakar al-Sadique, is in line with the All Progressives Congress (APC) manifesto and the Governor’s campaign promises of ensuring justice, equity and fairness to all without any segregation, as well as the decongesting of prisons.
