By; Sunday Ode, Abuja.
Governors of the 36 states of the Federation have thrown their weight behind the Nigerian Communications Commissions (NCC) as it called on the Federal Government to compel  MTN Nigeria to pay the $5.2billion (about N1.04trillion) fine imposed on it.
The Governors who met at the Presidential villa late Wednesday night under the auspices of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) commended the NCC for its strict compliance and enforcement of the law in its regulation of the telecom sector.
NCC imposed the levy on MTN for failing to meet a deadline to disconnect 5.2 million unregistered subscribers earlier this year.
The network operator, records showed has already lost about 24 per cent of their share value since the fine was made public on October 26.
Briefing journalists, after the meeting, Zamfara State Governor and Chairman of the NGF, Abdul’aziz Yari said the forum received a comprehensive brief on the development from the commission’s acting Executive Vice Chairman, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta.
According to the governor, the forum after receiving a presentation from the NCC chairman congratulated him on his appointment and assured to collaborate with the commission to assist in boosting the telecommunication industry.
“The Forum also commended the NCC for its strict compliance and enforcement of the law with regards to the fine issued to MTN  and advised the Federal Government to ensure prompt and full payment” he said.
As an aftermath of the fine imposed on the firm, its Chief Executive Officer Sifiso Dabengwa announced his resignation last week.
The governors at the Wednesday night meeting also agreed to meet with stakeholders to articulate a robust strategy that would address the deplorable state of the nation’s economy.
