FUTA debunks sacking of staff
By; Odeyemi Samuel, Akure.
Authorities of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) have debunked the insinuation making the rounds that some staff of the university has been disengaged by the management.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola at a  Press Conference in Akure, informed that only the staff of the university’s staff primary school were disengaged.
The disengagement, Prof. Daramola said was in line with the FederalnGovernment’s directive which ordered the universities in the country not to run staff school.
He said the teachers of the staff primary school affected by the Federal Government directive were given proper notice before they were laid off, just as he said that the university management provided a soft landing for the affected teachers as they were allowed to re-apply for jobs in the school.
He said the staff of the primary and secondary schools of the university and other universities in the country are under the management of the university and no longer owned by the federal government, a situation which he said disallowed the federal government from being responsible for the payment of their salaries and allowances.
According to him, the Governing Council of the university has approved that the management of the university takes over the two staff schools to provide opportunity for the disengaged teachers to continue their work, while the university management pay their salaries.
However, he said the leadership of the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) of the university instructed the disengaged staff not to apply when application for the post of Teachers in the school was advertised.
He added that the intervention of the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Mike Ogbodu to prevail on the disengaged teachers to re-apply were thwarted by the leadership of the two labour unions.
Daramola warned the disengaged teachers not to cause unnecessary crisis in the University, just as he dispelled insinuation that the University was embroiled in crisis, saying there was peace in the university.
He hinted that the disengaged workers were paid their entitlements through their pension fund administrators, and the University did not owe any of them.
