Former Minister of State Aviation, Felix Hassan Hyet has emerged the consensus chairmanship of Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at a meeting held in Kaduna today.
Hyet who initially was to contend with eleven other candidates got a breather when eight of them withdrew from the race leaving only four contenders, among them the incumbent and outgoing Chairman; Dr Abubakar Gaiya Haruna.
The meeting held at Zion World Hotel, Unguwan Boro, Kaduna, saw the Zone III PDP caucus where the chairmanship is zone to, made deft political moves that saw the number of contenders reducing to three; Gaiya, Hyet and Sajuru who was considered a lesser contender.
In what seemed a calculated strategy, the incumbent Chairman, Gaiya withdrew for Hyet who was endorsed by the caucus at the last minute even as Sajuri kicked.
It would be recalled the Chairmanship of the party was zoned to zone III, vice chairmanship to zone I, and Secretary to Zone II.
Before the meeting today, sources said there have been series of meetings, especially between the Zonal Zoning Committee and the Zonal Caucus for a rancour free election.
The also took the wind out of the sail for many of the contenders as they zoned the position to Kachia, thereby tatctically denying others from the Zone but not from Kachia the opportunity to test and prove their popularity.
Hassan Hyet was a one time Secretary to the State Government (SSG)succeeding late Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa after his elevation to the Deputy Governorship of the state following the death of the then Deputy to Governor Ahmed Muhammed Makarfi, Mr Steven Rijo Shekari.
The outgoing Chairman, A.G. Haruna was the state Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs under late Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa and became the party chairman following the elevation of Mr Audu Bajoga, then chairman to Deputy Governor following the death of Yakowa and elevation of Muhktar Ramalan Yero to Governor in December 2012.
By this move, it seems the PDP is poised to zone its governorship candidate for 2019 to Zone II.
