Flood claims lives of a mother, 3 children in Zaria

A heavy rainfall resulting in flood has claimed four lives including a mother and her three children at Ba ka-toshi street, Magume in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The rainfall which started at about 8:00p.m lasted for over three hours which led to flooding.
The husband and father of the deceased, Jamilu Usman told New Nigerian Nespapers that the deceased lost their lives when he (the husband) went out to buy medicine for himself shortly before the rain started.
He identified the deceased wife as Fatima and three children as Halima, Usman and Nana Khadija.
He said, “I spoke with my wife, Fatima when the rain started and advised her to be calm and take good care of the children.
“When the rain was over, I rushed back home only to see what I saw,” he noted.
When contacted at the scene of the disaster, Director, Planning, Relieve and Natural Disaster, Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Samson Gaura confirmed the incident.
Gaura, who represented the Executive Director, SEMA, Mr Ezekiel Baba-Kari, said they have so far been able to identified about 15 affected houses in just one street at Magume.
He attributed the flood to building on waterways and cautioned people against such act to save their lives and property.
“We are here for Rapid Response Assessment (RRA) to see for ourselves the extent of damage and whatever we see during our survey on the scene, we shall write a report to the His Excellency.
“This report will determine the appropriate action to be taken by the State Government as His Excellency is magnanimous enough to render possible assistance to the affected victims.” He assured.
Out correspondent in the area reports that property belonging to those residing on flood prone areas were seen floating on the stream while people were busy assisting them to get them back.
Also other areas affected include Unguwan Zaria, Unguwar Dankali and Tukur Tukur where many homes affected and some destroyed beyong repairs.
