Five persons have been reported to have lost their life in a boat mishap that occurred on Lagos -Ikorodu water ways last night.
The boat in.which they were commuting, owned by Blue Sea, was said to have capsized mid- sea on its way to Ikorodu from Lagos Island at about 5.57pm on Wednesday.
As at the time of the report, five other persons were said to have been rescued alive out of the 20 passengers that boarded the boat.
The General Manager. Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adebayo Tiamiyu who made the disclosure added that figures of other rescued victims can not be ascertained, saying they were brought to the jetty with various passing boat.
He disclosed further that the corpse of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue at ikorodu general hospital for autopsy.
Tiamiyu hinted that the rescuing exercise was carried out by a combined team of operatives of LASEMA, LASWA, LASAMBUS and SEHMU.
“The Agency received the distress call at about 5.57 pm, on arrival at the incident scene, it was observed that a 20 capacity passenger boat belonging to Blue sea capsized mid-sea enroute ikorodu from Lagos Island.
Investigation carried out by the LRT revealed that the immediate cause of the boat mishap was unknown at time of report.
Unfortunately 5 persons (4 adult females and 1 adult male) were confirmed dead as a result of the incident and their bodies were deposited at the morgue at ikorodu general hospital while 5 persons (4 female and 1 male) were rescued alive.
The exercise was carried out by the combined efforts of LASEMA, LASWA, LASAMBUS and SEHMU Figures of other rescued victims can not be ascertained as they were brought to the jetty with various passing boat”. The LASEMA boss stated.
Recovery efforts were still on-going at time of this report.
