The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Garba has urged the Federal Government to encourage the study of mathematics through a designed strategy and improved teaching methodology and learning of the subject.
He made the call at the 53rd Annual Conference of Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN) held at the Post Graduate School, ABU main campus, Zaria.
Represented by Prof. Kabir Bala, Dean, ABU School of Post Graduate Studies, the Vice Chancellor stressed the importance of mathematics, saying it was some ideas of mathematics that helped in revolutionising electronics which transformed today’s communication.
He said, for mathematics, useful gadgets such as television, telephone, satellites and computer would not have been discovered.
These, he noted, were so because of the nature of mathematics which was reasonably effective in physical and life sciences.
Garba, however, attributed the failure of most Nigerian students in mathematics in both WAEC and NECO to poor teaching methodology by teachers.
He therefore, stressed the need for review of mathematics curriculum to enable every Nigerian child to have the opportunity to acquire good numeracy skill.
On his part, Prof. Nasiru Muhammad-Maiturare, the Vice-Chancellor of Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai, described mathematics as “a subject that touches all aspects of human life.
“People see mathematics as a very difficult subject but it is not so, it is one of the simplest subjects that touches all subjects and all aspects of human life.
“The use of computer had simplified learning and teaching of mathematics in schools today.’’
He however said that the methodology of some mathematics teachers made the subject difficult for some students.
