The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai has said that the conflict between herdsmen and farmers has created a huge gap in the economic development and growth of Nigeria.
He stated this at the national conference organized by the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on the theme “Promoting peace , security and Human Rights “ curbing unsavoury relationship between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria “ held at ABU Hotels and Suites, Kongo, Zaria.
Represented by the Commandant Depot Nigerian Army Zaria, Major General Victor Ezegwu, he said herdsmen in Nigeria were known for moving from one place to another in search for their pasture for their herds, but are facing serious challenges of lack of acceptance by their host communities.
Gen. Buratai also identified climate change as one of the problems affecting the herdsmen while they are looking for where to feed their cattle, with no options than to move to riverine areas.
He hoped that the national conference will proffer proper solutions that will end the conflicts through intellectual knowledge and search for the root causes of the crisis once and for all.
