Farmers and herdsmen have commended the Federal Government for commencing the repairs of Kunnawa Dam in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
Most of the farmers and herdsmen who spoke in an interview with our correspondent stated that the dam was first constructed over fifty years ago through community self-help in order to boost irrigation and livestock rearing but it broke long ago, due to high water flow.
According to the farmers and herdsmen, the people of the area tried their best to see that the dam was repaired but there was no sign of action when the Federal Government included the dam into it’s programmes.
Malam Magaji Yakubu from Dungurawa town told New Nigerian that the farmers and herdsmen in the area would continue to use the dam for irrigation and fo livestocks rearing because before the breakdown, the economy of the people of the catchment area was increasing at both rainy and dry seasons respectively.
Similarly, a herdsman, Sulaiman Abdu commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his policies on agriculture because the current dams repairs would restore farming and livestock rearing in all the areas where similar repairs are in progress.
He called on the Kano State Government through the ministry of agriculture and it’s ADP counterpart to join hands in establishing good irrigation projects that would boost agriculture at Kunnawa Dam if completed.
Our correspondent who visited the dam site reports that the repairs have commenced for the speedy completion as scheduled by the authorities concerned, while the people of Kunnawa and it’s environs are jubilating on the development.
