One Ndifreke Sunday alleged to have been masquerading himself as a Marketer of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State is now cooling his feet in police custody over fraud.
PHEDC Manager, Corporate Communications, Mr. John Onyi who disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday, said Sunday was apprehended at Nwaniba Area of Uyo.
He said that the suspect was not lucky on that faithful day when some PHEDC customers whom he had previously collected money from with intention of helping them to pay their electricity bills, ran into him at the point of doing same to a customer.
According to Onyi, the swindled customers raised the alarm which attracted the neighbourhood leading to his immediately arrest and handing over to Ewet Housing Divisional Police Station, Uyo from where he would be charged to court.
Onyi said that the fake marketer had for months collecting money from unsuspecting customers, claiming that he (Sunday) was recently engaged as new marketer covering the area.
The affected customers started raising eye brow and began to search for the suspect when the money he claimed to have paid did not reflect in their subsequent electricity bills.
Meanwhile, the PHEDC Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kingsley Achife, had earlier in 2017 during a public forum drawn the attention of the customers to be aware of fraudsters who are masquerading themselves as PHEDC’s staff members.
He  warned electricity users not to give anybody money including the staff of PHEDC  for the purposes of paying bills on their behalf apart from the designated PHEDC offices, banks and the accredited agents.
He warned electricity consumers to avoid giving money to anyone to pay on their behalf to avoid being swindled.
